Ceramic Knife Sharpening: Experiences and Tips

Ceramic knife repair and sharpening

We’ve talked about sharpening ceramic knives before, and now we’ve managed to show you how to do it in a video. Although we do not have much experience in this field, we think we have achieved a reasonable result. We welcome anyone with a broader knowledge of the subject to share their experiences and tips with us.

In the video below we show you how we sharpened the ceramic knife. It’s interesting to see how the magnification would work at 5 m/s, but we worked at around 12 m/s. I suppose at slower speeds the material removal would be effective, but obviously more time consuming.

Fortunately, we rarely see ceramic knives, and we haven’t undertaken the sharpening of ceramic knives as they require much more work than metal knives. However, if there is a demand, it can be done. Ceramic knives are delicate and you have to be careful what you do because a missing line is difficult to spot. In addition, on white ceramic the edge band is difficult to see.

The following tapes were used for the sharpening:

Silicon carbide SIA 2707 P60-120-500

You can find a video of our first attempt in the comments. We almost gave up on the project at the time because the knife was very sensitive. When sharpening, it is very important to watch where you are going, because it is easy to make mistakes.

Although ceramic knives are more challenging to sharpen than metal knives, good results can be achieved with the right tools and patience. If you have experience with such knives, please share it with us in a message and if you’ve managed to sharpen or repair it, please throw a picture of it!

Go for it, and happy sharpening everyone! 😃🔪
