What is the BESS value?

BESS (Brubacher Edge Sharpness Scale) is a certified scale.

BESS (Brubacher Edge Sharpness Scale) is a certified scale that objectively measures the sharpness of an edge. Since a number doesn’t tell you much without context, we’ve put together a table to make sure how the score relates to the overall scale. From BESS 2000 onwards, you should cut through the test medium with an unsharpened knife, up to point 0: final sharpness. True: there are few knives that approach 0 BESS. The double-sided razor is about 50 BESS to give a better picture.

During the measurement, it determines the weight required for the blade to cut through a test medium.
The lower the BESS value, the sharper the blade.
Thanks to the uniform test medium, results can be compared anywhere in the world.
